Tonight's work was installing diaphragms on my latest passenger car, "high window" (24"x36" glass) coach 4501. Because my other Nickel Plate Products O&W coaches have Walthers, and John B. was asking about them, I got a pair the other day.



I'm switching to a shorter coupler as soon as I can get #153s, so I cut these in half. The new pressure plate is cut from an aluminum EMF shield from a scrapped gadget.



If I feel ambitious, I will apply the rooftop conduit to at least 4501, as even many of the AC-equipped cars of this type had the head-end lighting setup.



Here it is behind headlight-equipped 1538 drifting into Bexley depot.

I wasn't expecting a lot of uninterrupted time this weekend, so I decided to do trackwork, which I can put down and pick up without much chance of a glitch. I completed one turnout in the GE main plant's private trackage, and made progress on two more, details here:

Operationally, this gives me room for another 4-6 cars when delivering or picking up.

Some photogenic progress: Bachmann's B&M RS-3 detailing reflects the price. A little airbrush weathering helped, but I really noticed the absence of a steam generator. The other night I applied a stack & vent from Custom Finishing. Floquil Weathered Black isn't an exact match, but I'll work on that next time I'm using my airbrush.



In other news, my timetable is just about complete, so I know how many throttles I need. This is more than I have, so improvements are in progress.

Nice photos and layout James. Those Custom Finishing stack casting are nice for sure. I see also you are getting ready for operations. I would suggest you get a few friends over for some Beta testing sessions to see how your operating scheme would work. From there you can make changes to it. From experience it is going to change. It will evolve when you start operations and as you add or subtract trains. I know mine has. Also from experience keep a copy of each of your time tables for reference. I use Excel to create them. If you would like a copy I can email one of mine to you to save some time. All you would have to do is change the information from New Haven to B&M, times, train numbers, classes and town. Very easy to do on Excel. Bill

Thanks, guys. Bill, I'd like to look at your spreadsheet; the email in my profile will accept up to about 2MB attachments. I've been mostly working with Libre Office, but I haven't ever done fancy things with spreadsheets, so it's mostly for the tabular formatting.

I had a few minutes to browse in a Michaels last week, and picked up a tube of Liquitex "Hooker's Green". Yesterday I spent a while tinkering with it to adjust the color of the marsh grass pieces for the Little River scene:



This is better, but still a bit bright at a low angle. Anyway, I won't glue it down till I've got the water finished. In that department, today I mixed Mars Black, Titanium White and Raw Umber acrylics till I got a mud color I liked. Then I thickened it with Wood Putty and painted the stream bed and banks.



The marshes around here are pretty muddy, but there is often some sand and gravel showing on the inside of meanders and other places where the water flow slows. I used some beach sand for this, fixing it in place with some "scary hair" spray.

In my experience, LibreOffice and its derivatives are -more reliable- than Microsoft Office in opening MS Office documents. I've had stuff sent to me produced on MS Office on Windows that crashed my up-to-date MS Office on Mac, but opened just fine in OpenOffice/NeoOffice (Mac-specific variation)

Bill, I have MS Office in several versions: 2007 and 2010 are the handiest, but I really disliked the menu changes between 2003 and 2007, so the only way I'll get something newer is if it is included in the computer.
