For another perspective, if this forum was being written over 50 years ago people would be arguing over the fallen flags Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway; Ohio River and Western Railway, Pere Marquette Railway, Cincinnati Northern Railroad, Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway, Michigan Central, Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway, Hocking Valley Railway, Buffalo, Bradford and Pittsburgh Railroad, Northern Central Railway, Buffalo and Susquehanna Railroad, Geneva, Corning and Southern Railroad Company etc.
Every generations fallen flags will be remembered as different. |

Yeh, I grew up watching 100 car freights being pulled and pushed up grade through the tunnel into Tunnelton, Wv on the B&O by F7 and geeps and the West Viginia Northern coal trains coming up the grade to the interchange. Miss them all.

Excellent point, Clif....maybe the <wait for it>....."PC" thing to do is simply acknowledge the greatness of all the "fallen flags"...
Sorry, couldn't help myself. A bit of perspective is perhaps warranted.
The band of gypsies, tramps, thieves, pirates and all-around scallywags who regularly operate the HTRR are highly skilled both in the art of the flying car drop as well as a well-aimed barb in the back....at one point, Mrs. Harsco asked me what all the shouting was about downstairs; the answer was simple: it was just us being us...LOL. It was Matt's turn in the proverbial barrel last time, no doubt exacerbated by his ill-advised attempt to test-drive an object of derision for a couple of what Joe H refers to as "FPF's" (Foaming Pennsy Freaks"). The rest, as they say, is chop-busting history.
Usually we draw straws to see who will be the target of opportunity for the evening; if you read Matt's earlier explanation, you will no doubt take note of the malice aforethought in his purported attempt to secretly place the PC U-Boat on the High and Wide Movement, which is like gleefully waving a red flag in front of a PO'd bull and no doubt would have led to intense chest pains for a few of us FPF's.
Moral of the story: don't feel TOO bad for "poor Matt".....he knows his targets well, LOL.

If they could only see the e-mails that snowballed from "The PiC".... Lol we've got a fun and lively bunch down here.
So I think everyone can see why Harsco will likely NEVER hold one of those operating sessions that the operators bring a unit to operate on his layout. I'd have to bring a portable defibrillator along with the PC unit, and not just for him. |

| I spent the last couple of days reading through this thread and you have come a long way since the first post. The steel mill is awesome and all of those PRR ALCO's look great as well. There were so many more things I was going to comment on while reading the thread but it was too much information to remember all of it. How many trains do you run during a session? |

Oh come now! You've never hosted an annual "Run Whatcha Brung" op session? I hold those once a year usually around the first part of Spring. The same trains get run only with 'Foreign' power. Era is out the window to. I've had everything from a UP Big Boy to a pair of SP SD40-2's pullin' the cars around the layout. It's actually quite fun. You do have to have some ground rules like: DCC decoder equipped locos, knuckle couplers and No 'PC' engine what-so-ever! OK. Just kidding about the PC engines Red P and PC Matt. I tolerate it only for this session. I think I had one PC SD35 once. If you check back through my photos on my Web Shots link, I'm sure you will see some of those sessions on page 35. I know I've posted some here. Everyone has a good time and that's the point. |

Actually, that's a GREAT idea! I will have to poll the troops and see if everyone is on board for a future session....let's see: we'll have D&H (Joe C), BN (Bob P), PRR (Chris and Mark), Raccoon Valley (PJ),PC (Matt), CL&W (John), CNJ (Steam) and MNG (Martian Narrow Gauge - Hueber)
On second thought.....LOL |

Morning, Stephen...thanks for reading the thread and your comments..
As for the number, our last ops schedule had 21 scheduled runs as well as 8 "extras" that include a "high and wide" to GE Market Street and the usual spate of "Hot Extras" - deliveries of molten iron or steel to customers. Not included in this count are three to six inter-plant movements over the mainline between Herr and Maclay Street, which only serve to complicate the traffic flow even more. With the formal introduction of Market Street, this number (21) will actually increase by three, since there will be additional tar and aggregate shipments being made between Commonwealth Coke, Susquehanna Aggregate, and the future Barrett Shingle facility in Market Street.
The "Seven Miles of Sheer Hell" Route is about to get busier! |

| Hmmm, I have some nice PRR brass steamers that never get out on the rails. That would make for an interesting session! |

Yep... and lots of them too. This was one of those research projects which has a pleasant surprise. Barrett Company was an early chemical manufacturer (later becoming Allied Chemical); one division made asphalt shingles using the firm's patented "Tarvia" product.

From a modelers perspective, especially mine, Barrett is a veritable treasure trove of potential switching, since (in theory) they would have received paper products and tar from on-line vendor Commonwealth Coke, as well as crushed aggregate from Susquehanna Aggregate. Shipments of finished product would be in boxcars.
