LOL....at the moment she is "fiscally and aesthetically opposed" to the Market Street extension, but like the robber barons of old, I plan on extending the HTRR by any means necessary. You aren't running out of layouts to build, are you???
To explain Steam's comment: I have been planning another "switching district" like Capitol and State that will occupy the air space above my present workbench. Mrs. H is mostly opposed because she likes the way the workbench looks now and is concerned that it will become a Superfund site... |

I guess I taught my wife right many years ago. Anything in the basement is my space and all she requests is that she can store stuff like decorations, under the layout. And I don't bug her about any space above the basement ceiling![:-eyebrows] I'm a happy camper!!

I think I hear the familiar sounds of a tape measure!
On a serious note, taking another look at your last few pics, that second one is especially nice as I can picture the final result. Having that building, be it a church or whatever, just on the other side of the branch is a great idea. It allows you to swing the road around behind it where it will disappear behind trees. The other houses there will provide an opportunity to do some nice detailing. Backyadr stuff like laundry hanging, kids playing on swings, etc. I think this is going to be a really nice scene! |

Andy, one of Mrs. Harsco's most important titles (aside from "the better half") is CotE (Chancellor of the Exchequer), ie: CFO. She of course would never deny any "reasonable" expansion...the awful truth is I really haven't worked out the details yet in my coconut. I envision building a 24 to 28 inch deep extension that will probably be 12 feet long; for some time now I've been looking over a lot of track plans trying to figure out what would best suit my needs. If I can figure it out, the work bench would reside under the bench work and pulled out whenever I'm working, then pushed back underneath for operating sessions. The area in question is kinda/sorta narrow (the heater is right in back of me), so space might be the limiting factor.
The track plan is still up in the air as well; obviously I'd like something a little challenging, since the "extension" would be operated just like the existing State and Capitol "branches" are now...a local from Division Street would make a daily run and switch out loads and empties, then return. I'd like to come up with a couple of fairly high volume industries that would justify either longer trains or possibly twice-daily locals. One idea I've been mulling over is to model Barrett Industries (take a bow, Steam!) which made among other things, asphalt shingles. I have two on-line producers (Commonwealth for tar and Susquehanna for aggregate) that in theory could supply a fairly decent amount of raw materials to Barrett, necessitating perhaps a special local in addition to all the other customers on the branch.
If all this sounds confusing, then obviously you can understand my reluctance to start building without at least a somewhat firmer idea to start with....
Mark: we're on the same page; that's exactly what I was thinking as well. I still think I might be able to squeeze the farm in, depending on that screen of trees...
Joe: see what you started! LOL I've been vacuuming up styrofoam flakes for three days now....
Phil: how fast does that stuff set? Minutes? Hours?

Rick, I think that you have around 10-15 min of adjustment time after that you will have to break the jiont. I was leaving the weight for 24hrs mainly because I would glue after I got home from work and do the next section the next day. I also was making some transitions so wanted to make sure it didn't come loose. The tube says 24hrs and unless you are getting agressive I would think that 3-4 hrs would be sufficant with weight or clamping. |

Rick,
I always enjoyed the expansion talks. Nothing better than working through an aquistion plan with the wife. Thankful we both have supportive wives.
Good luck! |

| Rick, I"ll tell you what, I will build it in my garage and I will bring it up one night and PooF! there it is. lets see 2' x 12' should fit nice. It seams to be I remember doing a few other things that way. Jersey City was one and someone even got a bridge section that way. |

Hmmm...now THAT'S an idea...we'll have to time it right, when she's away for the day.
Mrs. H: "What's that"
Harsco: "What?"
Mrs. H: "That....when did you build another section?"
Harsco: "Oh, you mean THAT section...I didn't build it....Steam did"
LOL

You know Rick, might as well prepare yourself. Now that you've admitted that you like the idea and are trying to plan it, Steam will build it and deliver it when you least expect it! I suggest you begin clearing off your workbench now and make room! |

Rick,
Layout looks great. The new slope to the corner is very natural and the mock-up of the town really shows fantastic potential.
I'm also fortunate enough to have an exceptionally supportive wife but whenever there's an issue I remember the words of Walter Mathau in the 60's movie, "A Guide for the Married Man" - in response to anything it was always, "Deny it, deny it, deny it." |
