Put some Ls and Ts on it, paint it weathered black with the railorad name on it and call it a deck girder bridge over the "great chasm".

BTW Arizona distributor of the corner brackets has a $25 minimum so at $.95 each that's enough corners for 7 modules/frames

Chris, I"ll be ready for you next Monday.

Bill, Glad to be of help, glad you found some. I like the idea of painting and lettering the bridge, but any work like that will have to wait till after the convention.

Mark, No trains yet, the trackwork still needs to be done om the bridge. I won't be home tonight or tomorrow night so will have to wait till Wednesday before I can start laying the track. When its done I'm going have to record the trip of the first train over the loop.

Ron,

Did you make any special provision for aligning the track on the lift-out with the track on either side, or will it be 'by eye'?

On a similar (but shorter) lift-out on my layout, I came up with this arrangement to align the track automatically, and hold the lift-out in place securely.

I'd love to be able to come over to your open house at the convention and see an engine roll over the bridge but, as you know, I'll be at home with my own layout. It's a good thing that most of us showing have been to most of the layouts open at the show. Maybe after the show when we both have a moment away from getting ready.

One thing you might consider under the bridge is some sort of tell-tale hanging just under it to warn passers-through that they are about to come up too soon. Mike Mueller had several accidents at his bascule bridge even from those of us who regularly visit his layout. No problem, perhaps, with your temporary bridge UNLESS there's something special crossing at the time.

Jim is right. I used a thin bit of green tape on the flour and tell folks to not stand up until they have passed the tape.

Bruce, I keyed it in so once the bridge is not going anywhere and it keeps the tracks in alignment.

Jim and Chris, thanks for the ideas for warning people not to get up too early, I'll have something in place for the convention.

Jim,. I know what you mean by not being able to visit other layouts. After the convention we'll get together and run some trains.

Well it's been way to long since I posted here. After the convention last April I needed a break after working steady for the year previous getting it build so there would be something to show for the layout tour.

Well after much prodding from my Father (every time he came over he would head downstairs look at the railway and ask "How come you haven't finished the background painting yet?) and a forum member who shall remain nameless, I finally got around to finish painting the background.

So after doing some chores and running around for the Mrs, it was time to get started, time to pull out the supplies and get creative.

After a few brewskies to calm my nerves it was time to start. Well not really, but I did open one to start. What I really need was some good music to paint to, so it was time to turn on the ipod and listen to some good blues music to paint by.

Before starting I measured the amount of backdrop to be painted, a whole 16 feet to complete the backdrop. Here is the blank canvas.

Start time 8:10PM

8:25PM - The first layer of the first section is completed.

8:45PM - Made it around the corner

9:05PM - last section completed.

I decided to try my hand at painting a waterfall at the creek leading to Adam Lake. This entailed looking for an appropriate picture on the internet to use as a guide.

9:25 - Waterfall Completed, now it is time to paint a few dozen evergreen trees. [:-bigeyes]

10:30PM - backdrop finally painted.

It only took me almost a year from start to finish. [:-shades] The good news is that I didn't forget my lessons from Chris (LVN) on how to paint it.

Well time to grab me another brewsky and admire my handiwork.

Very nice Ron! And all that in 3 hours! Amazing how much one can get done on projects once you get started. Especially when there's beer involved. Too much generally slows down the project for me though. [:-drunk]

Nice to see you back in the railroad room and making some wonderful progress. After all, the toughest part of starting up again; is actually starting and that's from the King of the Procrastinators.

Great work on the backdrop, Ron, and quickly done! I agree with Peter. The most difficult part is to restart.

First off thanks for the comments on the backdrop, don't know why it has taken me this long to get it done seeing as I had a great time painting it.

And now for the latest update.

Flash Flood Disrupts Service on the Clearwater Valley Railway

A beaver dam burst on one of the many streams emptying into Adams Lake last Tuesday causing flood waters to destroy the trestle on Adams Lake. It took work crews 5 days working around the clock to reopen the line. It has been the longest time the railway has been shut down since the line opened for business. Even the great snow storms in 1909 didn't close the line for as long as this latest disaster did.

Well actually mt hot water tank burst and flooded the basement. Unfortunately the hot water tank is in the layout room. Fortunately most things were either in plastic containers of up off the floor. My magazine and book collection did not suffer any damage either as the water had not reached the lowest shelf level before corrective action was taken. The only real damage was to the carpet that I was planning to rip up anyway. The water damage ended the procrastination and now the carper has been ripped up and disposed of. One thing I did find out is that water logged carpet is heavy. [:-bigeyes]

I went to Home Depot today and bought some 24" x 24" interlocking cushion floor. I had already had some on the floor in the traffic areas and now I should have enough to do the entire floor.

Fortunately I built the portion of the layout that is in front of the hot water tank to be removable just in case the hot water tank would have to be changed on day. That day can sooner that i thought it would.

Here is the section of the layout that is in front of the hot water tank.

The removable section of the layout removed, the floor cleaned up and dry and the hot water tank ready to be removed.

The hot water tank removed.

The new hot water tank installed and ready to start making hot water. After two days without hot water, the first thing was to have a nice hot shower.

Seeing as I had (somewhat) easy access to the turnout located on the west end of "big tank" siding I decided to change it as it was causing trouble with some equipment. Putting a straight turnout in curved trackage was not a bright idea.[:-banghead][:-censored][:-banghead]

The new "curved" turnout installed. Much better flow to the trackwork now.

The removable section back in place and now the trains are ready to roll again. Is that a new section of backdrop that needs to be painted?

I'll tell you I can think of better ways to spend 5 days.
