LVRalph,
Did I mention the 4 most important words in the model railroad vocabulary, "My wife likes it".

Darryl, I like what you've done and I like where you've located it. My shelf layout is in my living / dining room because of space restrictions in my condo. I personally would give up railroad space (dreaming of a future larger home) to allow more room for family and friends. My wife likes to watch TV so I can be workin' on the railroad while she's watching TV and we can still be spending time communicating with one another.
I have some new furniture coming in soon - I'll have to take some overalls of my world soon.

My layout is in my office/computer room since I don't have a basement :(

I might be able to extend the other end and make a "U" shaped layout. All the RR needs are the appropriate approvals (read: wife' ok).

Anton,
I do not have a layout room either. I am thinking of doing something similar to what you are doing. Maybe along one wall for now.

| Anton, this looks like a real nice solutuion to the no basement. I assume it is an L shape , but can't quite make it out, if it is will you be able to get between the two different levels or are they each independent of each other? Thanks Pat |

Crabster,
Looking at your photos I see you have what looks like 1 by 4s laying on their side on top of shelf brackets with your pink foam on top of this.
I use shelf brackets for my support but instead of the 1 by 4s for support, I just added a piece of 1/4 inch plywood under my foam. Just cut it to the same size as your foam.
This will save you a little in height, strengthen your layout in case you need to move it later, and will be more warp resistant.
I certainly helps to glue the "sandwich" of plywood, foam and foam together. If you glue the plywood and your lower level of foam together and just glue your upper level with a couple of dots of glue then you can easily cut out sections of your upper layer to take to the work bench for detailing scenes.

Great minds think alike because I've been thinking about doing exactly what you suggested. I'vebeen tinkering around with the trackplan again anyway (it's all Mike and Rays fault for that) so I may just do that.

Hi fellas, Wow! It's fascinating seeing all the spaces we manage to find to place the model railroad of our dreams. Living rooms and offices certainly are quite unique locations for layouts. I recall seeing somewhere a fellow taking his layout to work. He had a smaller scale train chugging back and forth along the top of his office cubicle! Hmmm...I wonder if anybody has a story that could top these ones...and yes, I saw that creative article of the gigantic helix in the family dining room from floor to ceiling! [:-apple] [:-apple] |

Mike,
When I sold my Train Shop in 1978 the buyer moved it to a new location. The first order of business was to build a display layout for the new store. We wanted to try something different in building a layout so we put all the track in first before the scenery and benchwork.
Any of the scenery.
We put hooks on the ceiling and dangled threads down and tied them to short pieces of stripwood which supported the tracks. We actually ran trains on this before starting the actual layout.
We learned some valuable lessons.
We decided this was not the "wave of the future" but really a stupid idea. But we had fun. And it certainly got the attention of customers who dropped in to see the new store.
Sorry I have no photos of it to share. All the other people who were involved are dead or out of the hobby or moved out of the state. |

Jeeze! You think you're being nice guys. Let some guy come see the layout, answer all his questions. Then he blames you when he gets some new ideas! That's okay Anton, you can tell your wife it's all Ray and Mike's fault. We can handle it.
And best of all, if we ever meet your wife, even Ray can hide behind you since you are taller than him! For those out there who don't know Ray or Anton, Ray is 6'6", and Anton is somewhere around 6'8". It's a rare thing for Ray to find someone he can hide behind.
Nice progress on the layout Anton, but I have one question. Do you really need an office? Can't you just have a laptop and store the rest under the bigger layout that you could have without the office?
Come on man! Think like a model railroader!
Let the inner weasel out! "But Hon, if we had a laptop you could use it anywhere in the house - even in bed."
Oh wait, you might not want to make that suggestion, since it could adversely affect other...uh...aspects of your life.
Be creative. |

It's easier when you have a scapegoat or in this case two scapegoats (mike and ray). Oh and thanks for the books and videos. "Where'd ya get all that?" From Mike, hon.
Yeah the room has to stay a computer room because I am a part time computer geek (fixin systems for friends and the like) I am also a gamer so I have a kick *ss system although it is a tad bit dated. I'll be upgrading it yet again this winter. If I didn't have that 22" monitor, I could lower the layout a bit and put in a upper level. But when I run Trainz2006, it's nice with the big screen.
