Mantua made a good running locomotive, especially the ones with can motors and you could get parts for anything. They just didn't keep up with the rest of the industry in looks and detail. Plus, they rarely offered anything really new, just new roadnames on the same shells. I hated to see them go out of business last October, but in this industry as in all others I guess, you either go forward or you go backwards.
Hey Willie...I think you'd have a better looking and running locomotive if you reshelled the Atlas (my opinion). Too bad RPP doesn't make a GP50 shell. You're only choice really is an Athearn.
Has anybody noticed that you can interchange Athearn running gear parts with P2K, even the motors will interchange, all the gears, everything.

Yeah, pity.
Better-running, maybe. But at $185 CDN for the Master-Series GP40, it's Athearn (and tweak it) or nothing!

I guess Walthers locos would go in the "other" category, as would Concor. Not that they would get alot of votes.
Botchmam Spectrum got quite a few votes surprisingly. They do make some nice steamers... which is probably what garnered the votes. Its the Diesels which generally leave much to be desired.
I'll come clean and admit I voted for Atlas. KATO and P2K come in a close 2nd. Haven't had the pleasure of running any Genesis yet since nothing has been offered which I need. Want is another story, but I have be discplined or else I'll go broke! ;)

Jim. I have one Genesis loco (no guesses what it is but its only an A unit). It is excellent in finish but it is not so good as either Atlas, Kato or P2K for running. It may need some running in but it is not so good at slow speed.
I think Atlas have a slight edge on P2K or Kato but there is not much in it.

I agree that Atlas has the edge, but the problem is I can buy a P2K for $45-$55 where a Atlas will cost me $85. Hard to justify the cost difference.

I purchased most of my Atlas for under $70... I have not purchase any of the most recent runs which include decoders though... however, I'd consider that more like $65 for a loco, plus $20 for a decoder separately coming to $85, which aint bad.
Most recent Atlas loco I have is the GP40 in Rio Grande - 5 of 'em. I sure hope Atlas will do a "late" GP40 with the large Rio Grande herald! I expect those would sell very well!!!

Hi Phil,
I agree with what Jim said about Atlas. To me, the can motor and superior running gear is worth a few extra bucks. I see Atlas Classic at the train shows for $60 to $70.
Wish I was riding through Colorado,

Don,I am very happy with the way these units run.I have mine lettered for my T&SW Ry.I use these as yard units at the club and they have held up very well.IMHO they can take their place among the best.

Although I voted for P2K I also was impressed with RI FA1/B1 from Walthers. However the one that surprised me the most was the F7 Mantua I got at clearance for $15.

Hi T&P David,
Ihave to agree with you. They were a well engineered loco and the only decent steam available for quite a while, particularly with valve gear. I have 2 logging mallets and a prarie (new chassis and old diecast boiler) and while I had to remotor them they are smooth running machines.

Speaking of steamers,my 3 MDC RTR Shays that I have for home use on the KC&L runs smooth and rather slow.I am happy with these shays and the way they run.
