I'm also in the OTHER group too.
My favorite is Bowser. I model Pennsy steam and they are all over it. I love the assembly part and I love watching them run.

I'll second Roundhouse, though. I have an 0-6-0 that, now that it is broken in, runs Sa-WEET!!! I haven't clocked it yet, but it is slow enough that I can count the teeth of the worm gear turning- and it will steadily hold that speed. Not enough "lead in the pencil" to pull a lot of cars, but hey, it's a switcher. It doesn't have to.

Athearn make the widest variaty of engines by far. I have used them since before flywheels, and have only had one problem with a motor. Kato has some great running engines but are hard to get, and are pricy. Lifelikes new P2K engines have great detail, and are out in subjects that other manufacturers have ignored. (E-units)as have spectrum.

I prefer Athearn, and have thought of repowering some. But I am currently modeling subjects that no one have produced,SD70MAC (Kitbashing is your freind.)

Although I do have some Atlas and Model Power stuff, I "are" a loyal supporter of Athearn's blue boxes. The price is right, they run really nice with that newer narrow motor versus the old "wide body" motor, and I do not hesitate to "cut one up" in a kitbash project because they are easily replaced if a bad mistake happens. Oh yea, one other thing, they are incredibly easy to maintain and trouble shoot.

Spectrum, as the only running loco I have is a 80 ton three truck Shay. I do have a Roundhouse Climax still in the box but that don't count as it's a kit. Of course I don't know if the Shay runs or not, bought it new and it's sitting on some dual gauge HO/NOn3 track but I don't have a power pack. Guess I ought to think about buying one of those some day soon!

Hi Ya'll,
I have several Athearns, but most of my engines are Atlas. I have converted my Athearns to NWSL can motors. My question is this, once you buy the Athearn, then the can motor and the A-Line cradle weight, you could have purchased an Atlas Classic, so why not buy an Atlas in the first place? They have better detail, run much quieter, will creep around the track right out of the box, and you don't have to fine tune the running gear.

Actually, I don't because of cost!

Take my (infamous) GP50s. Even after I buy an Athearn GP50 and repower it with NWSL motor and put nickel-silver wheels under it, I'm 25% ahead of buying an Atlas GP40 - which I would then have to buy a GP50 shell for.

Furthermore, I can do the conversion over time. My current GP50's have decoders and have been "tweaked", but the motors and wheels are stock Athearn. Next is NS wheels, then the NWSL motors as the budget allows. In the meantime, I can run 'em as they are!

There are models where the Atlas makes more sense - especially the Atlas Classics. I think I'd use the Atlas if I wanted a C424, for example, or even a "straight" GP40. When it's something that Athearn makes, I think you're better off repowering the Athearn than reshelling the Atlas.

Good thing we like different things - otherwise, I'd have to chase you guys away from Mrs. Nose!!

Uh Oh,I just purchased an 0-6-0 Mantua loco.Paid $26.00 on ebay.Hope I didn`t make a $26.00 plus $10.00 shipping mistake.I see Mantua is at the bottom of the list.

i have sold my soul to the almighty blue box of compton

but....i LOVE their genesis SD70 series locos. i currently own 8 of them. i have heard people knocking the Genesis SD70's on many forums, mostly about the ditch light installation. i have had no problems getting mine installed and working. after the first one, i learned how to do it, and all the others have come along nicely.

athearn locos outnumber all other manufacturers on my railroad by at least 3 to 1
