I recently had my first opportunity to get a good close up look at the scenery and buildings in the new Cars Land at Disney's California Adventure Park. The scenery is based primarily on the movie "Cars" with a healthy dose of real Route 66 desert scenery. They got it spot on. Unfortunately I didn't take my camera in with me but I will next week.

this video concentrates on the background scenery as you enter from Pacific Wharf http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=pPvl6iQfa1A&feature=endscreen

a closer look at the scenery, RR content at 1:06 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fd9417N-sCM

This video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1UqXI43zWs primarily shows the transition from twilight to night lighting. Each night at sunset they turn the music to shaboom and start lighting the neon on each building one at a time as they work their way down the main street. You can also see some of the night lighting on the canyon and rock work

Here's a link to my first posted pics I took. These are just the scenery.

In the next few days, I'll be adding pics of the neon lighting, buildings based on the movie and on real buildings, other detail, landscaping and some of the new early Hollywood area.

movie fans, desert fans, Route 66 and classic car fans, and modelers are almost all somewhere between awestruck and stunned by accomplishments. (Which is a good thing because the ride lines are still ridiculous)

John Olsen must have had a hand in this, or at least served as creative consultant and inspiration.

Leave it to the folks at Disney! Looks like a great attraction and ride.

G'day Rick. I tried copy the JO style in my early "Frocks" attempts [:-banghead] and ended up with a Furlow [:-crazy]

It's been a while. Talk soon.

I wondered if they used your FRocks technique for the rocks.

That is awesome. Thanks for sharing.

Last summer we took to the kids to Disney FL. I was struck by the level of detail and realism that they put into each area of the park. For example, at most parks when you wait for a roller coaster you go back and forth through a maze of gates maybe the area is covered and maybe it has a video playing. At Disney you will wind through an area that has been detailed to the max with paraphernalia that is themed to the ride. It may be a building designed to look like a museum or a control room but it sets the mood for the ride.

As we spent our time there I kept thinking about this and how it translated to model railroading and it is very similar in the way we try to set the scene and mood of our layouts.
