Greetings Folks,

I've been at it for a while but I never really seem to make much progress on my HOn30 Saco River & Newfoundland railway. I don't have any space at all for a layout at the moment, so I've decided to try and get some of my rolling stock finished.

First up is the newest piece added to the fleet, a Steven's Creek Monson 26' Flatcar:

This is a scratchbuilt boxcar made up of styrene and the usual detail parts:

And here's a trio of older bits all assembled from Chivers kits:

I have a half finished reefer being made from a cut down Grandt Line kit and another low side gondola nearing completion. I'll try and keep y'all updated as I finish bits.

Cheers,

-Cody

Plus here's a little Class A 4-wheel Climax I started a while back:

It's only just been started and there's much more to be done but I think it's shaping up nicely. It runs on a Kato mechanism and the front tank is a Randgust casting I scavenged from his N scale Climax kit. The smokestack is from Keystone and the rest is wood, styrene, wire & brass bits.

Greetings,

As mentioned here's a few pics of what I've been working on. First, the flanger:

Still not done but pretty close!

Second, I scratchbuilt three of these little bulkhead flatcars based on a Molino Timber Co. prototype:

They're quite narrow and ultra light weight but run nicely. I hope to put a pulpwood load on these one day.

Finally, a diversion into HOn2:

It's a bunch of leftover bits cobbled together. The hopper is a Grandt Line Koppel ore car sitting on a Micro-Trains Nn3 boxcar underframe, with some wood scraps and a brakewheel. It's kind of a charming little car. The trucks scale out pretty close to early Gilpin Tram trucks in HO scale, close enough for me anyway. I have a few more little projects in the works, I'll keep adding them once I have something interesting to show.

Thanks folks,

I've been back at building again lately and will have some picture to show off shortly. I have the Flanger almost complete, with window glazing and paint even! I have to finish the roof and add a chimney and marker lamps then lettering. Also, the white styrene frame in the above picture has become a tool car again based (loosely) on a SR&RL prototype.

I also picked up a few more Kadee HOn3 truck kits which I plan to narrow to HOn30. I'm going to try and go the whole nine yards and keep them sprung and equalized this time. I'll update this thread with some pics when I get around to doing it.

More soon(ish, probably),

Actually, the channel looks correct to me.

Wow! those trucks look great, have you thought about going into detail showing how you built them.

Here's a quick shot of my narrowed Kadee HOn3 trucks with Micro-Trains n-scale 36" wheelsets:

I think next time I'll use a plank instead of a channel for the bottom part. Also, this is the 3'7" wheelbase version of the Kadee truck, I think I'll use the longer ones in the future.

Cody, I sent you a PM!

I have a few pairs of Grandt Line and Chivers Finelines trucks stashed away for future projects. I also plan to use narrowed Kadee HOn3 trucks with Micro-Trains n-scale 36" wheelsets which works out close to 20" in HO scale. I bodged on pair together and it wasn't too much work, I just narrowed the bolster, glued the sideframes on with Krazy glue and made a new bottom plate with a styrene C-beam. They look reasonable and run pretty nice.

There are also trucks being produced by 3D printing. Check Shapeways.com.

The Model RR General Store has HOn30 trucks. I think you can also get them from Chivers Finelines in England.

Lookin' good, Cody! Where does one find HOn30 trucks now-a-days? Grandt Line trucks are impossible to find.

Yeah, waaaay back. I decided to just use a Bachmann unit the kit was designed for, but I'm going to remotor it somehow. I'll have to dig up the Model power mechanism and see what else I can do with it...

Is that the forney you were building from a Model Power unit?

I used the one I had with the closest wheelbase to the prototype. I could have modified one to be correct but I'm a freelancer and am just going for the 'Maine-look'...

I want to finish the Forney I started ages ago and get some Maine-style passenger equipment in the works next.

Yep, I'm familiar with that one. I like the idea of using the 4-wheel frame.
