With other people posting on there layout progress and seeing as I like reading them I decided to start my own thread on my latest venture. After many years modeling in N scale I recently converted to On30.
First a little background. I've been modeling eastern Ontario for more years than I care to remember so for a change the new layout in located in the Thompson/Okanagan Valley in British Columbia. I like the backwoods feel so the railway is a rundown struggling operation barely eking out a living. The overall layout size will be and will be built in phases. The first phase being built is actually the center of the line and is "L" shaped. Size of this section is 6'-0" x 16'-10"

I think it looks fine here but it may appear different in person when you can see the depth better.

Ron, I like the overall shot. I would NOT make the cabin smaller.
Keep looking for an 'S' scale figure and truck.
Your cabin is too close to the tracks to use a smaller building, IMO.

Ron, I agree about moving the cabin and having the truck next to it.
The truck and figure still look too small to me.
I think someone else already mentioned it, but maybe a Matchbox truck would be a better size.
And I agree with trying an S scale figure too. |

Ron - I think its the cab on the Athearn truck that makes the difference.
Moving the cabin to the right helped immensely and the truck along side is better as well.
The lil guy sitting on the poorch, brings it all together for me,
The last picture (echoing Jerry) is the real deal!

Thanks for the comments Tom, Arthur and Mark.
Mark I tend to agree with you about the building, the windows and doors are huge for HO scale so that leaves me with two choices, 1 - look for S scale figures and vehicle or 2- build a smaller building, which will mean looking for HO scale buildings and doors. Right now I'm tending towards option 2 as I really like the perspective I get with the HO vehicle.

Ron, to me the scene looks good, but the cabin looks like it is a little bit big for HO scale. I wonder what an S scale figure and vehicule would look like in the scene?

Verne is right, the improved position is much better. I believe it was Troels who said that it's often better looking if something is off center, off kilter, not so plumb and square. |

OK, here we go, on with the truck saga.....
While I was in Montreal yesterday, I picked up an Athearn HO scale Ford Model A truck to compare it with the Jordan Model T as the general consensuses was the model T was to small, so here we go.
Here are the two vehicles side by side in front of the cabin.
The Jordan Model T at the cabin.
The Athearn Model A at the cabin.
A side view of both trucks, as you can see there is not much size difference.
Taking Verne's idea I moved the cabin over to the right and placed the truck beside the cabin. The scene looks better to me now. (That is an HO scale guy sitting on the veranda.)
As usual, any comments, suggestions or nitpicking is more than welcome.

The rocks are a mixture of plaster casting stained with washes of I/A, raw sienna and burnt umber.

I sorta kinda go with the "matcvhbox truck" idea
if you can find an old ford or something like that.
The overall effect is still great, even with the
small truck. JMO.....nice job Ron..... |

Ron, love the cabin. Is it available for rental, I need a cool green place to relax this summer!
As for the truck, size issues aside, I wouldn't like parking my old Ford on a grade like that...the brakes aren't that good, and I would get tired having to chock the wheels to keep it from rolling away. Perhaps a bit lower down and walk up, or can you clear a bit of space next to the cabin perhaps? Very picky, I know...I really like the scene! |
