Hey Crew,

Yeah, like the Lounge said, it’s yet again another blah[:-indifferent] Monday in California’s beautiful Coachella Valley. Didn’t get a chance to stop by the Lounge as the Missus and I had to get out early and do our usual Monday morning errands. Today, it was Lowes to get some plants, bug stuff and the like, then to the market, then to the bank and so on.[:-boring]

Finally, after two hours wandering hither, thither and yon, we end up back at the homestead at noon with the temperature hitting a toasty 110 degrees and it’s not even summer![:-hot][:-hot] Time for a Dutchman’s or three. So we unload the car and I go out to get the mail. Nothing. One piece of junk and an envelope from Model Railroader. I figure it’s a another “renew my subscription” or “check this new book” notice. So I open the envelope and:

WHADDYA KNOW ABOUT THAT?

The letter from editor Neil Besougloff starts: “Hi Steve, Congratulations! You are the first prize winner of Model Railroader’s 2012 track plan contest. We plan to publish your Louisville & Wadley/Wadley Southern track plan and story in the December 2012 issue.”

Well, ya coulda knocked me over with a feather. I was stunned, shocked and more than a little amazed.[:-bigeyes][:-crazy] See, I almost didn’t enter the contest which started in January. I only decided to see if I could do something in early March (the deadline was April 30). After I sent in the entry I put the whole thing from my mind since the last time I won a contest (2000 MR Small Layout Contest) it took a month or so for the judging. Thus my amazement.

As for the plan itself, it’s just a simple point-to-point scheme based on two Georgia short lines I’ve been studying and modeling for many moons, the Louisville & Wadley (10 miles) and companion Wadley Southern (20 miles), both of which interchanged with the Central of Georgia at Wadley. The contest specs called for any scale (I’m in HO) in a 200 sq. ft. space. Since the space for my new layout is half that, I designed the plan as if it were my “dream” layout, modeling key elements of both railroads. I thought it was pretty good but I never dreamed . . . (Yay me![:-bouncy]) And, yeah, the $800 prize money and publishing fees will go a long way toward lumber and track for the new layout (and dinner with the Missus for helping).

Anyway, just thought y’all would like to know. Catch y’all later.

Congrats Steve... well done and all of the hours "studying and modeling for many moons, the Louisville & Wadley (10 miles) and companion Wadley Southern (20 miles)..." really paid off!

Hey Crew,

Thanks so much for the kind words! I'm still amazed.

It'll be interesting to see how the final plan and article appear. Neil said it would be about 4 pages. 'Course I sent them way more than that including maps, illustrations and photos. I learned from the previous contest: send more than they can use and they'll use what they need.

Thanks again and we'll catch y'all later.
